Pahalgam Attack: The truth Indian TV channels won’t show you
On 22th April, a devastating terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, claimed the lives of 27 tourists, marking one of the deadliest incidents in the region in recent years. While Indian television channels extensively covered the tragedy, much of their reporting focused on divisive narratives, attempting to frame the attack as a Hindu-Muslim conflict. Media outlets claimed that terrorists specifically targeted Hindu tourists by asking for their names to confirm their religious identity before killing them. However, no credible evidence supports these claims, and such reporting risks deepening communal tensions in an already sensitive region.
What many Indian TV channels failed to highlight are the stories of solidarity, bravery, and humanity that emerged in the wake of the attack. This report aims to shed light on these overlooked aspects, highliting the resilience and unity of the people of Kashmir and beyond.
Condemnation by Muslim Leaders Across India
Political and religious Muslim leaders from various parts of India, not limited to Kashmir, unequivocally condemned the Pahalgam terror attack. Prominent figures issued statements denouncing the violence, emphasizing that such acts are against the principles of Islam and humanity. These leaders called for unity and urged citizens to stand together against terrorism.
Candlelight Vigils Organized by Muslims in Kashmir
In a powerful display of solidarity, Muslim communities across different cities in Kashmir organized candlelight marches to honor the victims of the attack. These peaceful gatherings saw participation from people of all walks of life, sending a clear message that the people of Kashmir reject violence and mourn the loss of innocent lives alongside the rest of the nation.
Historic Shutdown in Kashmir Valley
For the first time in 35 years, the Kashmir Valley observed a complete shutdown in response to the Pahalgam attack. Shops, businesses, and schools closed as a mark of respect for the victims and as a collective stand against terrorism. This unprecedented gesture underscored the region’s commitment to peace and its rejection of violence.
Unreported Stories of Compassion and Courage:
Heroism of Syed Adil Hussain Shah
Syed Adil Hussain Shah, a local horse rider who ferried tourists from the car parking area to the Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam, displayed extraordinary courage during the attack. The meadow, accessible only by foot or horse, was one of the sites targeted by the terrorists. When the attack began, Syed Adil attempted to confront one of the assailants to protect the tourists he had brought to the spot. Tragically, he was shot dead in his brave effort to save others. His sacrifice stands as a testament to the selflessness of ordinary Kashmiris who risk their lives for others.
Aadil’s Act of Humanity
In the chaos following the attack, another Muslim, a driver named Aadil went above and beyond to ensure the safety of stranded tourists. With many tourists left vulnerable and without immediate assistance, Aadil opened his home to a group of them, providing shelter, food, and comfort until help arrived. His actions reflect the deep-rooted hospitality and compassion that define the Kashmiri ethos, even in times of crisis.
Nazakat Ali a Kashmiri woollen clothes trader, saves the life of four families
In another act of bravery a Kashmiri woollen clothes trader, Nazakat Ali, who visits Chhattisgarh’s Chirmiri town every winter, heroically guided four families from the state to safety after they were caught in a sudden terror attack at the tourist site of Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday.
The Bigger Picture: A Call for Responsible Reporting
The Pahalgam terror attack was a tragedy that affected people of all communities, and the response from Kashmiris—Muslims and others alike—demonstrates a shared commitment to peace and humanity. Unfortunately, the focus of many Indian TV channels on unverified communal narratives has overshadowed these stories of unity and heroism. Such reporting not only misrepresents the reality on the ground but also undermines the efforts of those working to foster harmony in a region long plagued by conflict.
By highlighting the unreported stories of condemnation, solidarity, and bravery, we hope to present a more balanced perspective on the Pahalgam attack. The people of Kashmir, through their actions, have shown that terrorism does not define their identity. Instead, it is their compassion, courage, and resilience that shine through in the face of adversity.
The Pahalgam terror attack was a heartbreaking loss for India, but it also revealed the strength of human spirit in the face of terror. From the heroic sacrifice of Syed Adil Hussain Shah to the selfless hospitality of Aadil, and from the candlelight vigils to the historic shutdown, the people of Kashmir have demonstrated that unity and humanity prevail over division and violence. It is imperative that media outlets report these stories to foster understanding and healing, rather than perpetuating narratives that divide. Let the legacy of Pahalgam be one of solidarity and hope for a peaceful future.
