Political analysts expect a debate on a parliamentary motion regarding the conduct of Mr Singh, who is Workers’ Party (WP) chief, and two other party leaders – namely fellow Member of Parliament (MP) Sylvia Lim and former MP Faisal Manap – which could then open the door to a range of punitive actions.

The penalties include a fine, a jail term or suspension as MP if a motion is passed criticising the leaders in their handling of ex-member Raeesah Khan’s lies in the House.

But even before the parliamentary debate, all eyes are on the WP as to whether it would impose any internal disciplinary action and what form it could take.

When the party found out about an affair between former members Leon Perera and Nicole Seah in 2023, both resigned – with Mr Singh saying then that he would have recommended Mr Perera be expelled even if he had not offered his resignation. Speaking at a press conference in July 2023, Mr Singh stressed the importance of maintaining party standards and discipline so as to advance the interests of Singapore and Singaporeans, even if it means losing a “highly effective” MP such as Mr Perera.

Any similar outcome this time round could deal a hammer blow to the WP, potentially creating a leadership vacuum and throwing the party into uncertainty. Yet, if any action taken against Mr Singh is seen as inadequate, the party may face pressure not just externally, but from within its own ranks.

The timing could not have been worse for Singapore’s main opposition party as it looks to build on a credible showing at the General Election earlier this year. How it handles its latest crisis could affect its standing among voters and its own party members in the coming years.

The stakes are high and to survive this crisis, the party would no doubt need all of the experience and political nous of former chief Low Thia Khiang, who remains in its central executive committee.

Meanwhile, former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak was on Friday found guilty of all 25 charges of abusing his power and money laundering in his long-running 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) case.
